[ooc- I MADE HETALIA UNDERSTANDABLE…kind off]

For those interested in playing a Nation from Hetalia, or want to understand how they works here are some basic things so make it less confusing. For the ages and info I checked the Hetalia wiki.

The chars represent the country, the people and the history, but because Hetalia was made for laugh is filled with stereotypes. The character’s life is the country history. Wars, recessions, empires, unions, etc… that is symbolized this way:

-Wars: the chars fight each others, they bleed if their people are dying or generality feel sick. Wars between countries are hard, but war between people of the same country (succession wars) pretty much fuck up the chars because they’re feeling both of the sides of the war. As in, his mind and feelings split in two at the same time, it drives them a bit mad.

-Boss: it can be the president, the king, etc..nations can’t decide if they get into war or not, it’s their boss and people decision. Perhaps they disagree but they have no saying in the matter. Nations don’t have free will ;_;

-Recessions/ problems with the economy: The characters catch a cold. Funny thing is when one of them is sick it can affect the others. That mostly only happens when America is the one with a cold. When they have a good economy his house is bigger (When Spain was an Empire he practically lived in a castle and Romano got lost all the time), and when they’re having economic problems they’re poor and barely have anything. Worse it gets, more injured, they are.

-Problems with the weather/natural disasters: I saw a Seychelles's player that had her home suddenly flooded because her plumbing system broke and that symbolized a tsunami in real life. There’s a lot of accidental fire in Spain when it’s summer, and he gets sunburns. Got the idea? ^^'

-Unions/Colonies/Big brothers: The Habsburg family (Austria-Spain) and The Austro-Hungarian Empire (Austria-Hungary) were arranged marriages. The countries conquered by an Empire (The Roman Empire, England, Spain..) become part of their territory and in canon they’re represented as:

a) A unwanted union (Like Russia and the baltics)
b) Their kids (Spain and his colonies in South America, or at least that’s how he saw them)
c) Their younger brothers: England/America/Hong Kong/Sealand, Prussia/Germany , etc.

-Family: Some nations are brother/sisters by proximity, interest or they become that way for some reason or other. Examples.

-North Italy/South Italy
-America/THAT GUY (aka, Canada)
-Switzerland/ Liechtenstein: Vash found her and decided to take her into his care.
-Russia/Belarus/Ukraine
-Prussia/Germany: Once Prussia was dissolved they become the unified country of Germany and Gilbert become east Germany.
-North Korea/South Korea
-Spain / Portugal: They’re brothers because they were the iberia peninsula t first and only one territory, hence the family ties.

-Physical appearance:
Usually, how the char looks is similar to how old their country is in the grand scheme of things. That change in relation of how advanced is the country, how complicated is his history, how good is his economy, how many people lives there, etc.

Examples:

-Latvia look like he’s 13 years old and America look like he’s 19 or so. Latvia is actually older than America, but because it’s a smaller country and his economy is not as good in comparison, he looks way younger than him.

-Russia (Unknow age :|) is the tallest of the nations and is described as big boned, not fat. That’s because Russia’s land is helluva large.

-Prussia and Germany. Gilbert (23) is older than Ludwig (20), but is mentioned in canon that he looks shorter due to his bad nutrition as kid. That means that in the beginning Prussia as a nation had difficulties while Germany improved faster. Ludwig also looks older than the North Italy (20) boys, even if they have the same age.

-China is the older country of all of them (being 4000 years old and looking like 28), and then there comes, Russia, Greece (27), France(26) and Spain (25), since Germania and Rome aren’t here anymore. England is younger (23), in the strips you can see France bothering him as a kid, but at some point the nations stop aging and now they have a similar appearance, between 20-28 years.

-Relationships with other countries:
That’s basically the foreign policy. It depends of the time line they’re in and their history together.

Examples:
-America /England: it’s a soap opera, don’t even get me started :|
-France/England and Spain/England, England/Ireland or his other brothers: Now that I think about it, all becomes a soap opera when England is involved.
-Russia/The Baltics: Stonia and Latvia are still scared of him, Lithuania too, but he don’t get as stressed as Latvia when Russia is near.
-America/Russia and Russia/Prussia. They hate each others guts.

I’m sure I forgot more things, if you are interested or have questions please ask me~

Ooh ooh! Maybe you should mention the thing about how their different articles of clothing/random curly hairs represent different landmasses and stuff? That always made me go "wuh...?" when I was first getting into Hetalia >.>;

I thought about that too, but there was just too much things and it depends of the specific chars :/

Spain:tomatoes
Prussia_birds
France-roses
England-Fairies
Russia-Scarf
Belarus-knife
Greece/Japan-cats
Italy-pasta

...all of them have something :|

...Yeah that is a bit too detailed. And especially considering some of that stuff is based in common knowledge about the countries, it'd just be a waste of space, wouldn't it :|a

And just for the record, next time someone asks me to explain Hetalia, I'm just linking this to them because you've made it so much easier to understand then I've ever been able to.

It's like the parts of the person/parts of the country with America/Austria and their ahoge, Hungary's flower, etc.

D'aww I feel proud XD but ey, I'm sure I forgot some important details. Like the vital regions part のωの heh

China is the older country of all of them (being 4000 years old and looking like 28)

Lies, he looks like a 15 year old girl. :|b

Seriously though, this is a big help. I think the only question is whether or not the people on the Hetalia world know their countries - like, their leaders do, and I believe the citizens do as well?

I always thought that the citizens wouldn't really know that they were their countries, myself! :o Like, I always imagine England having to go through the "Yes, I am the embodiment of your lands and people :|" talk every time he gets a new Prime Minister. XD;

I work with that idea too, though I think Ireland's people know just what she is. Cause... well, they're Irish.

Why her people know because they're Irish? I don't get it.

Edit: Ah, ok, right..because of the fairy thing..ignore me.

Edited at 2010-03-12 07:15 pm (UTC)

^^; Yeah, basically what Fel said. That and I keep getting this image of Ireland going into a pub and everyone going "Oi, Ireland!"

I dunno, it always just fit right.

Hee, that makes sense, actually! I mean, God knows about the stereotype you get of the Irish people coming across fairies and leprechauns all the time... XD

Oh, that I can see! And now that I think about it, I guess the citizens at large wouldn't know about them, maybe just anyone who has to work closely with the nation.

Mmm, that's the assumption I always ran with. Like, I think maybe people might get a feeling that there was something different if they met their own nation-tan (I saw an awesome fic once where someone looked America in the eye and the Star Spangled Banner started playing in the back of their mind), but other than that, I don't think many people would notice.

omg, that fic sounds beautiful. ;o; I'll definitely note that though, thanks! o/

... oh god, I can see it. So badly. XD

A 15 years old girl with back problem :|

The leaders know, the citizens..I doubt it. ^^' but that's my opinion. How weird that would be for the people if they know.

He's an old man in a 15 year old girl's body aru!11 o9

Oh, totally, especially in modern times since very countries even believe in supernatural stuff, and they'd probably be way taken advantage of.

I truuuuuuuust you -> this is my trusting fais T_T

Yeah, exactly :D

aljfda. I fucking love you. :'D

>w< ILU TOO BB

Ask em question if you have them :D
